Westhoughton's first Big Plant gets underway

Westhoughton is going to blossom thanks to a new “Big Plant” scheme designed to improve the look of the area and to create more habitats for wildlife.

The multi-year programme, funded by Liberal Democrat run Westhoughton Town Council, will kick off in September with a planting scheme of 4,000 daffodils in various locations across Westhoughton.

Every school in Westhoughton has agreed to be involved, with school children getting involved in the planting. Other community groups have also signed up to take part in the initiative.

The daffodils cost £280 but additional funding is available from the town council to residents’ groups who want to join the scheme with their own planting initiatives.

Town councillor Alison Jackson said: “It was really great to have such a positive response from all the schools in Westhoughton. This will be a fun project for the school children to get involved with and it will hopefully have a positive impact on Westhoughton come the spring.

“Over the next few years we will be looking at how we can expand on this first year to go from strength to strength.”
