Bolton’s school children have been served up an incredible 75,000 packed lunches this summer, thanks to volunteers from Urban Outreach Bolton.

Westhoughton town councillor and Tesco worker Linda Maher was among the volunteers who were packing lunches - with some 3,000 sandwiches being made every day!

Linda said: “It was a great experience working alongside the brilliant Urban Outreach team Chris, Laura and Sam to name a few. The many volunteers who gave their time every morning for the six week summer break, knowing that the time we were all giving was going to support a very good and worthwhile cause.

“For me personally being part of the Tesco team who were allowed to go for the second year running, I’m looking forward to doing it again next year in one way but in another hoping it won’t be needed.”

The programme benefits children who would normally receive free school meals during term time.

The organisation also helps struggling families with Christmas hampers.

They are supported by Warburtons who donate all the bread, while Aldi supply the drinks. Many other companies donate different items to the project.
